During the Korean War (June, 1950 - July, 1953), the United States Air Force inflicted more damage on North Korea than any country has ever experienced in human history. All its cities were reduced to rubble and millions were killed. It is true, of course, that both Germany and Japan suffered devastating damage from the air during World War II, but, terrible though that damage was in its effects on those nation's infrastructures, housing and populations, it was not pro rata on the same scale as was experienced by North Korea during the course of the catastrophic Korean War. The policy pursued by the government of US President Harry Truman was barbarous; it was a war against civilians on an unprecedented scale. It is a measure of the lengths to which the American military were prepared to go to secure victory that the commander on the ground, General Douglas MacArthur, was pressing Truman to allow him to use nuclear weapons against both China (North Korea's ally) and North Korea itself. Fortunately, Truman had the guts to dismiss MacArthur before he managed to unleash World War III.
Looking back on all this, is it surprising that the North Korean leadership despises and fears the United States, and is determined that never again will that country attack them with impunity ? The North Korean nuclear deterrent has been created for two reason: Firstly, to ensure the survival of the regime (a dreadful regime, I know), which does not wish to go the same way as Saddam Hussein's regime and Colonel Gadaffi's regime. Secondly, to make it perfectly clear to the United States that a second attack on North Korea will cost them dearly. The United States is a country which only attacks countries they perceive as being far weaker than themselves - would they have attacked Iraq if Saddam Hussein had possessed nuclear weapons ? The North Korean leadership knows this, and are standing up to the cowardly American bullies.
